Etsy Picks: MayDae (Special Thursday Edition)

Sep 02 2010 Published by Stephanie under Etsy Picks,Fashion,Home decor

MayDae is happy holly happy to announce that we finally have new items up for grabs!  Here are some peeks (all photos taken by the lovely and talented Stormie Dae), but please head over to our Etsy shop for a full view of the goods.

Amazing leather flats.  *Swoon*

Fantastic set of Ball mason jars.  They are so shiny and beautiful, I had a hard time giving them up.

We don’t usually love pink, but these vintage dishes are just too cute to pass up!

This vintage toy typewriter is romantic.  I love the look and chic style.

Teal blue elastic flats.  Such a fun *pop* of color.

I also had a hard time letting go of these pretties.  Isn’t the print brilliant?

We hope that you like all of our new finds as much as we do!  We also have several items on *SALE* in our shop, so head over and take a gander at those as well!  Stormie Dae and I will be getting together tomorrow for Project Friday (formerly Project Monday) to take photos of more merchandise (yay) and have coffee (double yay).  We’ve got a big Labor Day weekend planned, and hopefully lots of relaxation time thrown in as well.  What are your plans for the holiday weekend?

Bisou bisou,

Sing a song of my purple past

Aug 26 2010 Published by Stephanie under Design,Home decor

I’m missing Manhattan today.  I love that city so much, and I wish that I could be there right now.  When Dae and I visited 3 months ago, we went to Anthropologie on West 15th Street on our first day there.  It was gorgeous – tons of natural light, creative displays, and 2 floors worth of printed fabric, colorful dishes, and vintage furniture.  These are a few photos that I snapped while we were there.  The employees didn’t seem to mind…much.

I love love love these antique printing press drawers!  Oh, and the dish towels, and the numbers, and the oven mitts, and the cups.

Anthropologie has this unique way of taking the most ordinary (sometimes ugly) things, and making you look at them in a whole new light.  If you’ve never visited one of these stores in person – go now!  I beg you, I urge you!  Photos really don’t do it justice.

Adore this.

Meanwhile, my current hopes for this weekend:

——————————Create something beautiful out of something “ugly”.

—————————————Scour the flea market with friends and take lots of photos.  (SO excited!)

—————–Iced coffee – lots of it.

——————————–Discover new favorite music that I never knew existed.  (any recommendations?)

What are your plans this weekend?  An Anthro visit perhaps?

Tea party inspiration and a giveaway!

Aug 19 2010 Published by Stephanie under DIY,Food,Home decor

Hey-oh!  We have some sunny yellow inspiration AND a giveaway for you today.  First, the inspiration – a year ago MayDae hosted a formal tea party for a few of our family members and friends.  It was a lovely morning/afternoon of tea, good food made from scratch, handmade decorations, harmless games, and lots of laughter:

Earl Grey tea, Peach tea, and Indian Spice Chai were all served at the table.  I love this vintage metal tea pot, but the handle was scalding hot!

All of our decorations were vintage and handmade.  We were going for a very colorful and bright look.

The table was set up under a tent and we used lots of paper decorations, including these simple cut outs that we sewed together.  We used old magazine pages which added a lot of color, and we love how they turned out.

Our food table.  Lemonade, vintage trays, fresh flowers, cake stands, Anthropologie latte bowls, and pretty food labels on skewers were used.

I love the rustic feel of these bacon and onion tartlets.

Coffee cake, lemon cake, blackberry napoleons, truffles.

Egg salad sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches, croissants.

Scones with Devonshire cream, raspberry preserves, and orange marmalade.  Yummm, we’re feeling very hungry all of a sudden…

And now, for the giveaway details:

MayDae is giving away this ultra cute Melmac cup and saucer, and this vintage hand embroidered sign that says:  You Are My Sunshine.  Aren’t they adorable?  All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post (one comment per person).  We will pick one winner at random on Monday, August 23rd, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. MST.  Any comments left after 5:00 p.m. will not be eligible.  Giveaway open to U.S. residents only.  Happy commenting!

Etsy Picks: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Aug 16 2010 Published by Stephanie under Art,Etsy Picks,Fashion,Home decor

Good morning wonderful readers!  It is that special time of week when we (the sisterly team of MayDae) bring you an assortment of finds from our favorite online shopping source – Etsy.com.  This week’s inspiration?  Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog.  If you haven’t watched this musical tragicomedy short film (as Wikipedia so aptly describes it), then you should go and watch it right now.  You can watch it on Netflix Instant Play, or on youtube for free.  The story is set up in 3 Acts, and each Act is about 15 minutes long, so you can easily watch it over your lunch break, coffee break, dinner break, or any other break you may be having today.  Warning:  this film contains brilliantly written songs and score, so be prepared to hum them for the rest of the day.

In the story, we meet Dr. Horrible (played by Neil Patrick Harris), who is an aspiring supervillain, coming up with schemes to take over the world, while keeping a video blog of his progress.  Dr. Horrible is in love with Penny, a girl he sees at the laundromat every week, and trouble ensues when Penny mistakes Dr. Horrible’s nemesis, Captain Hammer, for saving her life.

We hope you love watching Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and we hope you enjoy our Etsy picks for this week:

Etsy Picks: Back to School

Aug 09 2010 Published by Stephanie under Art,Etsy Picks,Fashion,Home decor

The sisterly duo of MayDae is happy to be back with our Etsy Picks for this week.  Although it was refreshing taking last Monday off, we missed it terribly!  Since it is now August (how did we arrive here so fast?), it’s time to think about all of the people headed back to school.  Whether you’re attending elementary, junior, high, college, or graduate, (or perhaps just know someone who is) we think that you will be able to appreciate our pretty finds.

We always loved the exciting new beginning of a school year.  New paper, pencils, shoes, and a sparkly back pack promised to make the year successful, prosperous, and at the very least, manageable.  What kind of feelings do you have about these back to school days?  Does it bring back memories of nervousness and angst, or happy memories of simpler times?

May’s Etsy Picks:

Girl Reading.

Can’t you just smell the wax?

(Vintage school desk from Rhapsody Attic, brown leather oxfords from Black Swan Vintage, desk supplies from AM Radio, girl reading print by Belafonte, vintage chalk board from Mechanical Stag, crayons from Vintage Bella, vintage ruler from Every Eskimo, cat eye glasses from Thrush, Snoopy metal lunch box from Mrs. Rekamepip, apple necklace by ACGA)

Dae’s Etsy picks:

Pencil skirt from Vonlenska Vintage, Globe from Artful Vintage, Microscope from Opendoor Studio)

Graffiti me.

Aug 04 2010 Published by stormie under Fashion,Home decor

Recently, a very good artist friend of MayDae’s painted both of us and everyone else in our family these amazing graffiti inspired pieces.  The colors are bright and each piece is so uniquely different – we all had a hard time choosing which one we wanted to keep for ourselves.

The graffiti look reminded me of Vivienne Westwood’s summer 2010 collection which has traces of the art form starting with the hair all the way down to the tights and shoes.

Just be open, you’ll feel better.

Jul 28 2010 Published by stormie under Home decor

Open shelving in kitchens is better than cherry pie – and I love cherry pie.  I’m actually not sure why I made that comparison, it just felt right at the time so I went with it.  Open shelving doesn’t only have to be a couple of boards laying across braces(although I do LOVE that look), people are also just taking off their cupboard doors to display their dishes.  As a person who spends most of their money on kitchen supplies, I am definitely a fan of showing it off and I don’t want to hide it behind a couple of sheets of wood.  Yes, keep the cabinet doors underneath to hide the really big pots and ugly flamingo bowls you got from Aunt Sally for your wedding and only pull out for the rare occasion that she drops into town, but otherwise – be proud of your dishes and let them shine!

For goodness sake, I know you want to see these pictures but what are you still doing here?  Go, take a screw driver or even just your bare hands and rip the doors off your cabinets right now!  You might even be able to make a cute table or a pair of wooden clogs with the scraps of wood.  Okay – maybe not the clogs, but something.   And seriously…don’t even get me started on this open pantry.  I’m salivating here.

Etsy Picks: Summer Music Festival

Jul 26 2010 Published by Stephanie under Etsy Picks,Fashion,Home decor,Music

Throwing something on the grill or spending a day at the pool are necessities for summer – but you must also hit up at least one music festival to make this time of year official.  It’s about hanging out with friends, the sun and sometimes sand, getting dirty and feeling pleasantly exhausted afterward, and hopefully good music.  The team of MayDae* has spent months working for a music festival this year and it’s finally here on Saturday!  Even working, it is a must to remain perfectly dressed and accessorized – and it is definitely possible.  This week our Etsy.com picks are all about having fun, staying cute and well-prepared, and listening to a little music – with thousands of other people.
