It’s here!

Goodbye Summer!  It’s time pack it up, pack it in and make room for Fall!!

I know I am jumping the gun with my enthusiasm because it is still technically Summer but Fall is just around the corner – I can taste it and it is divine!  Fall is my favorite time of year, not only for the comfortable chill in the air and cool nights spent drinking coffee with a great book to read but because I am a layer dresser through and through and Fall is the perfect time for it.  Even in the Summer, you will never see me without at least 2-3 shirts on and often times a scarf, 90 degree heat ignored.

For the past month, my internal clock has been completely off and my sense of the date nonexistent – but even so, I can feel Fall coming and I was thoroughly surprised and ecstatic when I received my September Issue of Vogue a few days ago.  If this doesn’t scream “Fall”, I don’t know what does!

I look forward to this issue all year and the 726 pages of fantastic Fall fashions did not disappoint!

This skirt is fabulous.

Red.

These are only the tip of the iceberg but they’re great, aren’t they?  Well done, Vogue.  Well done.

The Little Prince

Jun 16 2010 Published by stormie under Books,Fashion

I am a reader.  I read at any chance I get, it doesn’t matter if it is fiction, non-fiction, historical, futuristic, romance, thriller, or anything else under the sun.  If it is words on a page, I have to get my hands on it and pour through it.  This might explain why I am doing another book post when I just did one on Friday.  I can’t help myself, I just have to.  This is my favorite book of all time.  The below photo is my actual 1968 copy of Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s La Petit Prince, or The Little Prince

This is one of my most treasured possessions.  I have started purchasing copies of this book wherever I see it and currently have about 6 copies, including one I bought in New York a few weeks ago.  What I wouldn’t give to get my hands on an original 1943 copy.  As a child I would carry this small book in my pocket or purse and read it over and over again.  I couldn’t get enough of the The Little Prince and the Pilot and their journey through the sky as they discussed love and loneliness and sheep and asteroids.  The profoundness and insight of this book astonish me and teach me everytime I pick this book up, but I could also understand it as a child which is part of the genius of it and shows how Antoine knew how to connect to the heart of a child.  I cannot explain in words my deep love for this story and it’s simple illustrations, the style of which I have not seen anywhere else.

Today I have decided to express my love through fashion influenced by the beautiful artwork of the greatest book ever written.  Please enjoy my interpretations of The Little Prince through clothing and self expression.

If you have never experienced the joy of reading this book for the first time, I encourage you to take the time to do it now.  It will be time well spent – it will strip you of your adult responsibilities and give you the freedom to be carefree like a child again, I can promise you that.  If you have had the pleasure of allowing the words of this story to wash through your mind and soul, it’s probably time to let The Little Prince do it again.

Look Both Ways

Jun 11 2010 Published by stormie under Books,Design

I bought this book in New York from the wonderful Strand bookstore and instantly fell in love.  I have always wanted my journals to be filled with random pictures and different ways of writing.  I crave the artistic form of expression but sometimes put a little too much thought into what I am doing.  It takes me forever to actually start writing in the dozens of journals and notebooks I own because my expectation for great design and art is so high for myself.  I guess in a way this is a good thing, but I have decided I need to be more free with my design work…that is my goal for this year, I think it will be liberating.

When I started flipping the pages of this book, I was delighted to find that each section looked completely different than the rest.

Debbie Millman shares real stories from her life and how they intertwine with branding, design, music and art among other things.

Look Both Ways is a book where everyday life collides with incredible design – which is how it should be.  Her work is inspiring to say the least and this book was definitely one of my favorite purchases in New York.  Now I just need to get my hands on her other book, How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer.
