Halloween Birthday Valentine.

10.8.2011 by Stephanie May under Art,Holidays

I was looking back through some old MayDae posts this week, and came across my recreation of this print.  I still love it- I can’t believe that we did that 8 months ago!  This year is going by soooo quickly.

I also came across my kid’s handmade Halloween costumes from last year.  I am so excited to make their costumes for this year, but I  don’t know what they will be yet….

What was your favorite Halloween costume as a child?

P.S.  Happy Birthday today to our Mom!!  We love you:)

You impress me

8.31.2011 by Stormie Dae under Art,Etsy Picks

I honestly cannot get enough of letterpress.  It makes me so happy, and someday – someday I will do my own.  But until then, here are a few of my current favs from Etsy:

{Alphabet by One Canoe Two}

{Feathers Block Print by One Canoe Two}

{Diamond card by Tabletop Made}

{Kitchen Utensils by Ruff House Art}

{Pattern Postcards by Quill and Arrow Press}

Also, I’ve suddenly developed an obsession with airmail envelopes.  Weird?  Yeah maybe…but I really need to get my hands on some – they are so pretty.  Got any lying around in your Grandma’s garage?

Homeness

I love this print from AshleyG so much.  Staying home is a wonderful thing.  Comfort, closeness, privacy, intimacy, goofiness, realness – these are all things that I experience most when I am at home.  Since we are right in the middle of making some changes in our house, it has made me think a lot about this.  Do you like to constantly be out or stay home most of the time?

In other news:  my bangs need cut.  But I want them to grow.  Quandary.

Monday Pretties

6.20.2011 by Stormie Dae under Art,Etsy Picks,Fashion,Home decor

Today was rainy and gorgeous and I finally did something new in my living room!  I used a new wire book shelf, new art pieces and other odds and ends to decorate a wall…all courtesy of thrift stores and recent garage sales.  I might finally be ready to start a house tour soon!  I can’t promise I will be able to show the entire house all at once(I can actually pretty much guarantee it won’t happen), but I think as I finish rooms, I will show them to you.  The new wall makes  me happy to look at and I can’t wait to show you!

To go with my pretty wall, here are some Etsy pretties I found today and am swooning over:

My surprise

5.29.2011 by Stephanie May under Art,Fashion

So….I got a tattoo last night.  And it is a big deal for me because it was my first one!  Oh, and I had NO idea that I was getting one.  Here’s how it happened:

My husband Tristan told me that he would be giving me another gift at my birthday party (which was last night).  I kept begging for clues because I can’t stand when he knows about something that I don’t.  He totally threw me off by telling me that my secret gift was “mostly white” and it had “wheels”.  Ummmm, okay??  A bike?  scooter?  Yeah, those were the only guesses I had.  So anyway, at the party, we had just eaten dinner, and the front door opened.  Stormie’s friend Chris walked in, carrying his tattoo equipment (yes, the same artist that did Stormie’s latest tattoo).  I was literally speechless.  I just stood there like a dork trying to figure out why he was there, and then he said “Happy Birthday” and I realized that he was there to tattoo ME!  I was freaking out…a little.  Time to make the big decision – and quick.  Luckily, Tristan had already told Chris exactly what I wanted – “I love you” in Tristan’s handwriting tattooed under my collar bone.

“Before” tattoo.

Tristan carefully writing “I love you” on the carbon paper.

Stormie helped us figure out the placement, and Chris applied the stencil.

I was SO nervous.  I had no idea if I could handle the pain or not, but I was about to find out.

Tristan held my hand when he first started – thanks honey!

The pain wasn’t bad at all (thank goodness!).  It just felt irritating more than anything.  The whole tattoo took about 10 minutes.

Done!

I love it SO much!  Thank you to Tristan for coming up with this amazing birthday gift!  And thanks to Stormie for arranging it, and of course Chris for doing the actual tattoo (he did such a great job!).

I will share more photos from my birthday party soon:)

Love,

Sometimes I disappoint

Sometimes I just want one of these.  We’ve had lots of rainy days, but not really any quiet ones.  I’m trying to declare this a quiet rainy day.  Want to help me enforce it?  Not really sure how…but we can just pretend that we are on some elite rain squad that forces everyone to be quiet and listen to the rain that hits the roof and the streets outside- let’s be really cheesy and call it a storm-ie squad, yeah?

Happy rainy day…it’s time for some quiet.

Inspiration Piece

5.16.2011 by Stormie Dae under Art,Fashion,Home decor

I spent some time looking through my “Inspiration” folder on my computer this morning(along with working of course).  I feel like I haven’t been spending a lot of time lately working on house projects because there was so much going on at first and I’ve been taking some down time lately.  It doesn’t help that it’s getting nicer outside so I’ve been trying to spend most of my time at home in the garden.  All good things, I just feel like the decor part and finishing projects in the house was on the back burner for awhile – but I’ve been thinking about finishing my projects a lot lately.  I figure I should be able to work outside AND do the things I want to do inside simultaneously.

I hold my decor ideas pretty close to the vest because I’m prideful and don’t want other people to “steal” my ideas…except that I stole them from someone else in the first place.  I know, it sounds silly.  So when I thought this morning about posting some of my inspiration photos for you, my first thought was to avoid that at all costs at the risk of someone sniping the idea out from under me before I could get around to it, thus making me the second person of everyone I know to do something.  I know, that would be the most horrible thing right?

*Please note, I do realize how ridiculous this sounds and I am rolling my eyes at myself as I type.

When I got to really thinking about it though, I feel like maybe it will help me to get my crap together sooner if I reveal some of the ideas I want to implement in my house.  Honestly, I’m not worried about other people doing them.  I like to share cool ideas that I stumble across every so often..and really, there is nothing new under the sun.  So why not share the goodness that inspires me?

*Unfortunately, when I save inspiration photos, I don’t keep track of the sources – so I don’t remember where I found these…if you know, send me the link and  I’ll definitely give credit where it’s due! :)

Kinda in love with random and crowded photo walls… I already have lots of pieces to do similar things with

LOVE this reclaimed wood floor, and the white walls – so delicious!

There is something so cheery and fun about this

Dreaming up ways to display photographs, great simplicity

Doesn’t technically have anything to do with home decor, it’s just an AWESOME headdress

This concept is pretty brilliant…I doubt I will do this one though but it makes me happy to look at

This just reminds me of all my dishes that I adore

Also not home decor related, but pretty fantastic nonetheless

Love the neutral thing right now…white walls, white bedspread, white life

Of course I kept my favorite favorites in the safety of my inspiration folder…I can’t reveal ALL my secrets…but this should tide you over for now.

Love,

Stormie Dae

Artists are fun.

4.29.2011 by Stormie Dae under Art,Books,Design

And you can be one too!  Art House Co-op is now accepting participants for the 2012 Sketchbook Project.

According to their website, “It’s like a concert tour, but with sketchbooks”.  How fun is that?!  They have a whole list of categories for you to choose from for the theme of your book and then they will send you a sketchbook with a barcode.  After you’re done filling it up, you mail it back and it takes a little art show tour around the world.  Because it has the barcode, you can track anytime someone checks out your book which is an awesome feature.  After the tour, it is then catalogued permanently in the Brooklyn Art Library.  Yes please.

There are different rules about how wide your sketchbook can be in the end and other stipulations like that, but for the most part – you can do whatever you want.  And for someone like me who doesn’t spend a lot of time drawing, the appeal is in the ability to use other forms of art rather then just sketching.

My friend, Nick, participated in last year’s project which is currently on tour and you can see some of his pages here.  Awesome stuff.

I think a whole group of us is going to participate for 2012 – now the task is to figure out what theme we want for our sketchbooks…care to join?

The things we do

4.27.2011 by Stormie Dae under Art,DIY

Yes this is my kitchen.  Yes I am getting a tattoo in my kitchen.  Is that not normal?

I decided to give myself a birthday present and have my friend Chris come over to add to my neck tattoo.  I had a cross tattooed on the back of my neck about 6 years ago and I always wanted to add something else to it, but hadn’t decided until a few months ago what that would be.  So on Saturday afternoon, Chris came and set up his gear and away we went.

I think this tattoo hurt less than both of my other ones…which could be due to the fact that it swelled up like a balloon…which was weird.  It was almost like an allergic reaction(which you can faintly see in the below photo).  This didn’t happen with either of my other tattoos but it wasn’t that big of a deal, the swelling went down a couple hours later.

The goal was to make my tattoo a little more feminine, and I think my new addition definitely does.  I absolutely love it!  Now I probably just need to get my faded cross touched up….uhhhhhh, Chris?? ;)
