Yesterday Gemma got a pair of kid’s scissors and clipped the front part of her hair off.
Apalling as it may be, she is actually my 3rd child (out of 3) to cut her own hair without us knowing. Now, I know what you are thinking, “why are your kids left unattended with scissors?” and to be honest, I don’t really have a good answer for this, other than they found scissors, and seemed to think that a little trim was a good idea.
I felt like getting upset and yelling at her. I could have easily let my emotions lead the way – blown up, cried and screamed….but I chose not too. Even though it’s a little embarrassing right now, I don’t want to make her feel bad about the way she looks. In any way.
She is beautiful. And I will treasure these photos every time I see them.
After all, it’s only hair right?

you’re a perfectperfect mom, and she looks beautiful! it’s only hair! and yes. in a house where you actually have things and buy things and use things and clean things and wash things and do things – it’s impossible to 100% childproof. they’re little tiny kid scissors, just like at school yo!
what a cutie :)

Tara cut your bangs , just lopped them front and center to the scalp right before a mother-daughter event at church and I cried. But I was very pregnant (read: hormonal) with your little sister and just mad at myself for not watching closely enough.
Tredessa cut her own hair when I left big-people-scissors on the back of the toilet stool after trimming your father’s hair. I had a melt-down. And a one-week-old baby, so I think I was a little post-baby-hormonal. But I recall sitting on the steps and and sobbing out, “How could I be so stupid?”
Guini talks to me at times about her super-short cut of a few years ago (which she helped along quite a bit, *smile) and we talk about how it helped us see her face so much better!
I just posted a picture of GemGem in 2009 on FB. Her hair was way shorter and a more adorable bebe you can hardly find.

Awe she looks adorable even with a silly little piece of hair missing! You are so right it is only hair, and it will grow back quicker than you think! I am so happy to see a mom that was more concerned about her daughters self esteem, and understood that it is only hair! Yelling would have only made her feel bad, and sad, and you have to choose your battles, and I agree this is only hair =)

Yes! I was just waiting for the day…;-) She is still as beautiful as always, and I saw her probably just hours before this happened…at least I think I would have noticed if it had happened before that – ha!

You handled it perfectly! And may I say? Her hair is stunningly gorgeous. Maybe time for a summertime pixie cut is in order?

She is cute with or without her hair! And what a great response from you. It is so easy to let our emotions blow (pretty much how my day has been). Way to go mama!

It never occurred to me as a child to cut my own hair off for some reason. The closest thing I did was when smelling an oil-scented candle and I toasted my fringe instead… She does look just as adorable and a liittle bit mischievous!
